This learner came to ITN following a significant school placement breakdown. He had developed an extremely negative association with school and learning and had experienced trauma which resulted in PTSD linked to education. At the beginning of the placement, he did not want to engage in education or build relationships with adults whom he associated with teaching and learning.
Our approach
We recognised that introducing academic expectations too quickly was likely to reinforce his anxiety and previous experiences of education. ITN therefore prioritised safety, trust and relationship-building before academic outcomes. We identified that having two consistent tutors would work particularly well for this learner, providing a change of face while maintaining predictability and trusted relationships. The tutors worked closely with his family to understand his presentation, interests, triggers and successful approaches.
A clear timetable was gradually established to reduce anxiety around what would happen during each session. His interests were embedded throughout the provision, with learning introduced naturally as his confidence developed.
Progress and outcomes
The learner has progressed from significant resistance towards education to now fully engaging in 15 hours of tuition each week. His programme has developed to include English, Maths, STEM, cooking, PSHE, community-based learning and LCB Education accredited workbooks. One particularly significant academic achievement has been writing. Initially, the learner was unable to write; he is now independently producing work using cursive handwriting.
His development extends beyond academic attainment. He accesses the community alongside his tutors and has begun developing independence through activities such as walking the family dog. The next stage is to gradually introduce learning outside the home as his confidence continues to develop. His tutors describe it as a privilege to have seen the progress he has made. What began as a placement centred around rebuilding trust has developed into a broad and meaningful educational programme.
